1. Latine Experience
This book is the definition of childhood. As a first-generation Latina who could relate with the main character on so many levels, this book made me feel heard. This fictional book has the right amount of nostalgia and very interesting twists and turns that you do not see coming. If you want to shed a tear or read more about the struggles of an "unperfect Mexican daughter" I recommend reading this book.
2. Asian Experience
I usually am not a graphic novel type of person, but this easy-to-read, but very emotional rollercoaster will open your eyes to family issues, especially in BIPOC families who have immigrated to the United States. Trauma and Forgiveness are key themes in this author's graphic memoir.
3. Native American Experience
If you want to learn more about the Native American experience and history, this is a great book for you. Even though it is not hard to read, at times it might get difficult to process the characters lived stories, so it is okay to take a break between chapters!
4. Race in America
Do you need a 101 into Race in America? If so this is your read! Each chapter title is a question about race in contemporary America. The author states her opinions on each topic, connects them to her own experience, and gives the readers advice on how to talk about these certain issues.
5. Black Experience
This book will have you going through all the emotions while going through the journey of the main character. It is based on the true story of a reform school that has a very horrific history of abusing children who were sent to it. The symbolism and trauma experienced by the characters are really important to keep in mind when connecting the timeline of the storyline.
